The Sacred Area of Largo Argentina, in the heart of Rome, stands as one of the magnificent examples of a multi-layered site that characterizes the city. It is precisely here that this research focuses, through the examination of archival, bibliographic, photographic, archaeological, and art-historical sources, because, above one of the temples, the medieval church of San Nicola de’ Calcarario was built, and later, in the modern era, that of San Nicola dei Cesarini. The latter, entrusted to the Somaschi Fathers from 1695 to 1824, was managed by the Discalced Carmelites until the end of its “existence.” And it is precisely this period—brief yet eventful—that this volume aims to explore through a description of the community’s daily life, as well as the history of the church itself, analyzing the individual works of art it contained, including the burials it housed, and ultimately leading to the demolition of the structure, which, nevertheless, has retained traces of its existence to this day.
